Self Storage Team Milestone: Happy 1-Year Anniversary to Chris Lasswell
Here at Lockaway Storage, we know our success is due to our wonderful team. The care they give our renters is unparalleled and we want to highlight their milestones along the way. Below is an interview with San Antonio team member Chris Lasswell, who is celebrating his 1-year anniversary with Lockaway Storage this week.

Lockaway Storage’s Front office on Culebra Road.
Chris is the Manager for Lockaway Storage – Culebra.
Peter: What year are we celebrating? How long have you been with Lockaway?
Chris: It’s going on a year this month.
Peter: Nice, how did you get involved with Lockaway?
Chris: I had actually left my previous job to tend to a family matter and I guess I soon realized that my bank account was not as big as my heart, so I wanted to try something that was a little different than retail management, but still utilize my skill set. So I felt like I would give self storage a shot.
Peter: How do you like it after a year?
Chris: I enjoy it. I like being able to not just do one thing over and over, but have many different things throughout my day and set my own pace for the day.
Peter: Do you have any good stories? Like, when someone asks what it’s like working in self storage, do you have any go-to stories?
Chris: I don’t really have a favorite story, but I will tell you that it does feel pretty good when the tenants tell me that they can see what I am trying to do here, that they can tell that I care about the property, the way it looks and the upgrades that have taken place since Lockaway took over. Kind of brought it to the next level.
Peter: What have you learned working for Lockaway?
Chris: That people do care! I have never worked with a company that treated each other like this, that go out of their way to show you they care. With Lockaway the tenants matter but so do you!

Lockaway Storage – Culebra features affordable, convenient office space.
Peter: That’s really cool. Do you live in the San Antonio area?
Chris: Yeah, I actually rented an apartment across the street, so I am probably 50 seconds away.
Peter: Do you ever feel like you are always at work?
Chris: No, it’s not really like that. I actually enjoy driving by the property. As, I’m driving down Culebra, I can look on the right and see that everything’s in good shape from what I can tell. I don’t mind it at all. Plus, I have a 10×10 here and it’s really convenient when I need to switch out clothes or anything like that.
Peter: Nice, so in addition to being the property manager, you are also a tenant?
Chris: Yes, sir.
Peter: You’re just using it as extra closet space?
Chris: Yeah, well, just extra space in general. I downsized a little bit, but you always seem to have a lot of extra things. I’m not a horder or anything, but I always end up having boxes of stuff that I can’t fit in my apartment. I have two children, so now toys have become the priority in my home.
Peter: Haha.
Chris: All of my stuff has to go somewhere else.
Peter: That’s very nice of you to make room for all of the toys. Do your kids keep you pretty busy?
Chris: They do. I do have two kids. I have a 10-year-old son and I have a daughter that is about a year old.

Drive up access is a convenient feature at Lockaway Storage – Culebra in San Antonio.
Peter: Outside of work do you have any hobbies?
Chris: You know, you just mentioned one of them. I do spend a lot of time with my family. One of the other things I do in my spare time is mentor young adults who are stuck in a certain way of thinking and try to help them open their eyes to seeing something a little bigger than themselves, so I spend some time doing that. Between work and mentoring and being a father, that pretty much eats up a lot of my time. I do enjoy cooking. Then, of course, eating what I cook.
Peter: The mentoring you do, is it through an organization?
Chris: It’s through my church, Freedom Life Church in San Antonio. I take on different people at different times who either go to the church or I meet somewhere and I try to lead them to the truth. It will end at some point. Eventually they do end up going to church.
Peter: Are there any local restaurants you like to go to?
Chris: It just depends on what I’m in the mood for. If I wanted a plate of really good chicken fried rice or something, I’d go to Fire Wok. If I wanted a really yummy take on General’s Chicken, I always hit up PF Changs. Breakfast Tacos tend to be a thing here in San Antonio, so if i wanted a yummy breakfast taco, I’d probably go to Tink-A-Taco. They’ve never let me down! They have really good carne asada. I add some cheese and onions and it hits the spot.
Peter: Dang, I need to go to lunch after this.
Chris: Right?
Peter: At the end of these, I like to ask if there is anyone on the team who deserves a shout out. Is there anyone who has helped you out at Lockaway Storage?
Chris: There are a lot of people at this company who have lended a helping hand. As far as shout outs, I’d like to thank Ashley and Thomas for giving me the opportunity to work here, because I interviewed with both of them. I’d like to say thank you to Jason, because he trained me, for being patient during my pages and pages of note taking during training. My District Manager, for always being understanding and appreciating my groove. And, last, but not least,Don and Tristina. I’d like to thank them, because, in my opinion, they leave a trail of warmth and joy wherever they go. They show you they care by their actions. They don’t just speak hollow words and then tell everyone to get back to work. They are two very amazing people and I am sure anyone who has crossed their paths would agree with me. The very last person would be Chevis. He’s new manager on my property and he came in here with a smile on his face, a great attitude, ready to help me make a difference, so you can never go wrong with that.
Lockaway Storage Celebrates Customer Appreciation With Cookies!
Facility Manager Chris Laswell presenting cookies at the Customer Appreciation Event on March 8th.
Lockaway Storage is a company that is always looking to take care of its customers. In 2018, the company will focus on doing more customer appreciation events as it continues to grow and expand. Without happy customers, no business will thrive for long. Our self storage facility on Culebra Road recently hosted a customer appreciation day on March 8 as part of the new initiative.
“We are focusing on showing our customers this year just how much we appreciate them,” said Amy Medrano, District Manager in San Antonio. “So we’re having a lot of events like this with cookies, drinks and referral cards. Good word of mouth is the best kind of advertising you can do.”
Chris Laswell, Manager at Lockaway Storage on Culebra Road, took charge of the event, even though it was scheduled on his day off.
“It didn’t feel so much like an event,” said Laswell. “But it was more about going around and taking care of the customers that do business with us and to let them know that we appreciate them.”
Affordable rates and quality, secure facilities will always be important to the success of any storage facility, but going the extra mile for renters in unexpected ways is a major focus for Lockaway Storage this year.
“In the Texas heat, a little refreshment is really nice. It’s something our customers don’t expect and that little something extra,” said Medrano. “Chris plans his events really well. He lets our customers know in advance when we have these events, so we can get as many people in as possible.”
The event was more than just snacks however. Attendees also received referral cards to help spread the word about Lockaway that are worth $50 off rent.
“We do $50 referrals for our customers and that helps us spread the word,” said Medrano. “Word of mouth, easy to do, and very effective.”
If you’re looking for office space, Lockaway Storage on Culebra Road has cost effective, professional office space for rent as well as traditional self storage units. Give Chris a call and be sure to snack on a cookie or three while you move in!

“My family and I were looking for some storage places close and reasonable. Just speaking to Chris on the phone as we say in the military gave me a warm and fuzzy about the establishment. Chris was very professional gave us a grand tour of the place and also showed us the storage sizes that were very suitable and within budget. I have some personnel that I would definitely recommend going through Chris for lock away storage. If we return to San Antonio, we definitely will use this facility again.!
