Ahh, fall. Is there a more perfect season?
Pumpkin patches, apple orchards, s’mores, hayrides, leaves bursting into colors that leave us in awe. Lowkey, I may be obsessed with pumpkins and s’mores.

Free and Inexpensive Fall Activities Close to Home
No need to venture far to lose yourselves in the magic of fall.
- Take an after-dinner walk, listening to the falling leaves crunch underfoot while enjoying stunning sunsets—collect the most colorful leaves for festive table décor or fun crafts.
- Embark on a neighborhood scavenger hunt.
- Sit on the porch with a steaming cup of cider or coffee and just breathe in the season’s beauty. No agenda.
- As Halloween nears, take a neighborhood stroll, delighting in the playful and spooky decorations, perhaps picking up an idea or two for your own decorating fun.
- Gather your favorite Halloween and fall décor from your garage or Arroyo Grande or Santa Maria storage unit and decorate your home while listening to a few ghoulishly cool tunes. “Monster Mash,” anyone?
Budget-Friendly Fall Day Trips and Outings
It’s all about the experience and adventure.
- Go for a scenic drive, looking for trees adorned with breathtaking crimson, orange, and gold leaves.
- Tool around the backroads, veering off the beaten path, stopping at local farmstands and country stores offering fresh apple cider. Gather favorite goodies for a yummy picnic with fall’s freshest harvests.
- Throughout October, the family will love strolling the streets of Solvang and Cambria during the scarecrow festivals, admiring one-of-a-kind, handcrafted scarecrows.
- And what would fall be without a visit to the beloved local pumpkin patches and apple orchards? A few favorites to check out on the Central Coast include The Pumpkin Patch, Brookshire Farms, and Avila Valley Barn. Let everyone pick out a small pumpkin and a basketful of apples fresh off the tree, all for good old-fashioned family fun later at home!
Wandering, driving, and simply enjoying family adventures with the freedom to follow your whims. What a wonderful way to spend the day together, inexpensively and joyfully.
Cozy Fall Activities to Do at Home
- As the nights cool down, gather ‘round the firepit for the yummiest backyard treat—of course, we’re talking about s’mores! Have some fun with it and add in extra goodies (I’m thinking peanut butter for a homemade Reese’s s’more!).
- Why not make a night of it?! Feast on s’mores while stargazing. Then, fire up the projector for an outdoor movie, followed by a campout while the weather behaves. Grab blankets, a few pillows or outdoor cushions, popcorn, a thermos of hot cider, and pick a lighthearted, family Halloween flick—perhaps Hocus Pocus, The Addams Family, Ghostbusters, Hotel Transylvania—whatever tickles your fancy. Best of all, if your camping days are behind you (or were never with you), you can pop inside whenever you feel the need for a little creature comfort. Don’t worry, we’ll never tell.
- Pumpkin decorating time! Whether you decide to carve or decorate your pumpkins, this wholesome activity is a fall rite of passage. Cover a table or the floor with a vinyl tablecloth (easy to wipe clean in a jiffy) and place carving tools (for grownups, of course) and craft items, including glue, googly eyes, fake mustaches, hair pieces, feathers, pipe cleaners, etc., out for everyone to share. The wackier, the better, warts and all!
- Go screen-free and put your game face on with an evening of your favorite family activities, including board and card games, puzzles, and charades. Ready, set, game on!
- As the sun begins to set earlier and the weather cools, fall invites us to slow down. Take a break from the cascade of activities and curl up for family reading time. Have everyone pick a favorite book or story, light a few candles, and get cozy. Quiet together time.
Fall Gardening and Cooking with the Kids
Depending on where you live, fall can be a wonderful time to plant a family veggie garden. Get everyone involved. Nothing beats homegrown veggies from your own backyard. With the weather beginning to cool, try:
- Brassicas, including broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts.
- Root veggies, including carrots, beets, and turnips.
But the backyard can’t have all the fun! The kitchen is a fall superstar if ever there was one.
- Simmer a pot of hot apple cider using some of the apples picked from the orchard.
- Bake a delectable apple pie or crisp, or make caramel apples using the rest of the apples you picked.
- Have the kiddos pick ripe veggies from the garden and toss them into hearty soups and stews.
Mmmm, there’s just something familiar, comforting, and absolutely delicious about the aromas of cinnamon, apples, and cloves wafting through the halls.
The best memories are often the ones that don’t cost an arm and a leg. Scenic drives, roaming through a pumpkin patch, backyard adventures, game nights, baking or cooking together—really, just hanging out. Skip the pressure of trying to be everywhere at once. Leave FOMO at the door, and focus on treasured moments.
You don't have to spend a fortune—or fill every weekend—to have an unforgettable season.
Fall in love with fall.
