Decluttering your home and don’t know where to start? All of us at Fortress Secure Mini-Storage know what a daunting task decluttering can be. That’s why we’ve come up with a few great tips to make this project easier to tackle.

Decluttering doesn’t have to be intimidating, start small and complete one space at a time, organize everything into four categories, and consider if a self-storage unit is right for you.

Don’t Overwhelm Yourself

Most people can’t get their entire home done in one day, even if they want to. No one has the attention span to spend eight hours organizing. Start with a single room or even a section of a room, such as a closet, and begin by pulling everything out. It will make a mess, but it’s the easiest way to start organizing. Spend a couple of hours each day and finish a room completely before moving to the next. This is the best way to ease the stress that is decluttering.

4 Categories of Organization

Once you’ve started on a room, it’s important to organize your belongings into four categories:

  1. keep
  2. give away
  3. store
  4. throw out.

This is also a great spring cleaning tip. Items that you keep should be things you’ll use on a regular basis and need on hand. Give away or donate things such as clothing, decor, and other things that people could use. Store seasonal items such as winter clothing, Christmas decor, and other items that aren’t used regularly. Lastly, throw away what you don’t need!

Consider Self-Storage

If you find that you still don’t have the space for all of your things, consider renting a self-storage unit. Clean, secure facilities allow for more items to be kept in great condition until they are ready to be used again. Self-storage is great for decluttering garages, attics, closets, and much more. Fortress Secure Mini-Storage offers a variety of storage units that won’t break your bank, and we offer other amenities too.

Simply follow these steps and you’ll have a Marie Kondo storage experience in no time. Remember that a self-storage unit is a great option if you simply don’t have the room to store your belongings in your home. These storage ideas for clutter will take the stress of storing right off of your shoulders!
